The Winter's Tale is a play William Shakespeare, first published in the First Folio in 1623. Although it was listed as a comedy when it first appeared, some modern editors have relabeled the play a romance. Some critics, among them W. W. Lawrence (Lawrence, 9-13), consider it to be one of Shakespeare's "problem plays," because the first three acts are filled with intense psychological drama, while the last two acts are comedic and supply a happy ending.

Blind rage underlies Leontes’ jealousy in The Winter’s Tale. Although his jealously is akin to Othello’s, it is not carried out to the same extent, thanks to the oracle’s pronouncement. While Leontes’s change of heart strains credibility, he does redeem himself and, in the process, changes the tragedy into a comedy, or at least a play with a happy resolution. One might also compare Hermione with Desdemona as both are “more sinned against than sinning” (Lear, III.2). Despite Leontes’ reformation, one cannot avoid sympathy for Hermione, she who has been made to pay dearly for her husband’s lack of faith and trust. She certainly deserves more.

The setting is Sicily, and Polixenes, the King of Bohemia, is visiting his childhood friend, Sicily’s King, Leontes. Leontes suspects that his wife Hermione and Polixenes are having an affair and he becomes murderously jealous. Leontes tells Camillo, one of his lords, that he wants him to poison Polixenes. Camillo, however, informs Polixenes of the plan, and the two men quickly depart for Bohemia. Shakespeare took much of the story from Pondasto, A Triumph of Time by Robert Greene, a contemporary of his who had little admiration for the playwright. Shakespeare changed the story by giving it a happy ending. This annotated edition includes a biography and critical essay.

Erstdruck in: Shakspeare's dramatische Werke. Übersetzt von August Wilhelm Schlegel. Ergänzt und erläutert von Ludwig Tieck, Bd. 8, Berlin (Georg Andreas Reimer) 1832. Vollständige Neuausgabe. Herausgegeben von Karl-Maria Guth. Berlin 2015. Textgrundlage ist die Ausgabe: William Shakespeare: Sämtliche Werke in vier Bänden. Band 2, Herausgegeben von Anselm Schlösser. Berlin: Aufbau, 1975.
