This text is constructed to educate clinicians on the general classification and diagnostic approach to soft tissue tumors, such that they feel more empowered to discuss the relevant features of particular cases with their pathology colleagues. Particular consideration is given to diagnostically and prognostically relevant ancillary studies. The first section addresses the basic foundations of soft tissue pathology, including common morphologic patterns, approach to grading, concepts of immunohistochemistry and molecular studies. Following this introductory section, each soft tissue tumor is presented according to its morphologic differentiation. Sections include lipomatous tumors, fibrous lesions, fibrohistiocytic tumors, neural and nerve sheath tumors, and smooth muscle neoplasms. Each entity is presented in a consistent and organized manner, first discussing the clinical presentation and then addressing the gross and microscopic features. Following this, the immunohistochemical and molecular findings are presented The text then briefly discusses prognosis and treatment. Representative photographs of the microscopic appearance will be included in a large format. Soft Tissue Pathology for Clinicians will further patient care by concisely educating the clinician on the relevant aspects of soft tissue diagnostics.

The management of soft-tissue neoplasms has always had an aura of mystique due to the relative rarity of these lesions in comparison to the more common cancers occurring in man. There are many variations in technique of the operations employed for these tumors as well. In this volume we have illus trated our own personal preferences in approach to soft tissue sarcomas with the hope it will serve as a useful guide to the surgeon who is faced with one or more of these problems. None of the operations depicted in this manual are original with us but they are procedures and approaches we have found effective for the clinical management of this family of tumors. In presenting this volume we wish to acknowledge our gratitude to our surgical teachers, our present and past associates in surgical oncology, our colleagues in the other oncologic disciplines, and our patients whose treatment is illustrated herein. We are indebted to Dr. Saul Kay, Professor of Pathology, and Dr. James Walsh, Associate Professor of Radiology, for providing the illustrations of histopathology and radiologic imaging in the early chapters. We particularly appreciate the superb artwork of our enthusiastic teammates, Trudy Nicholson and Jane Hurd, as their contribution is the crux of our endeavor. Walter Lawrence Jr., M.D. James P. Abnormal proteins are known to be associated with various pathologies. Most notably, these include amyloidoses, monoclonal protein deposits associated with plasma cell dyscrasia/multiple myeloma, cryoglobulins and various related organized and non-organized deposits. Amyloid and Related Disorders presents an overview of the most recent developments in this area including clinical presentation, etiology, pathogenesis, and differential diagnosis. The rationale for various therapies, including transplantation, is discussed and tissue diagnosis (its pitfalls and strategies for avoiding them) and laboratory support are included. The involvement of all major organ systems including renal/genitourinary, cardiac, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, peripheral nerve/central nervous system, soft tissue and bone marrow pathology is covered. This approach provides a unifying concept of these pathologic processes, which have systemic involvement, and which have, hitherto, not been universally appreciated. Awareness of these diseases among a wider audience of pathologists may increase the rate of their diagnosis as well as that of earlier diagnosis. This volume will be invaluable to specialized and general pathologists as well as cytopathologists; other medical professionals may also benefit from this concise update on the systemic amyloidoses.

This book comprehensively covers modern soft tissue pathology and includes both tumors and non-neoplastic entities. Soft tissues make up a large bulk of the human body, and they are susceptible to a wide range of diseases. Many soft-tissue tumors are biologically very aggressive, and the chance of them metastasizing to vital organs is quite high. In recent years, the outlook for soft-tissue cancers has brightened dramatically due to the increased accuracy of the pathologist's tools. All methods of diagnosis are covered here, with an emphasis on the newest immunoassays and other genetic, molecular, and immunologic diagnostic modalities. This book's systematic description of benign and malignant primary soft tissue tumors with didactic, comprehensive panels of illustrations allows the reader to formulate a complete understanding of the morphology of tumor entities at one glance. The book covers both the most common tumor entities and more unusual diseases using more than 1,500 color images, making it a resource for beginning and senior pathologists.

Neoplastic mimics or "pseudotumors" can simulate neoplasms on all levels of analysis--clinical, radiologic, and pathologic--and thus represent particular diagnostic pitfalls for the pathologist that can ultimately lead to therapeutic misdirection. This book provides the pathologist with detailed morphologic descriptions and diagnostic guidance in recognizing these neoplastic mimics as they occur in the soft tissues and bones. In addition, descriptions and diagnostic guidance are provided for the range of lesions that are considered benign neoplasms but may mimic malignant tumors. Throughout the book comparisons of neoplastic mimics with true neoplasms (and benign neoplasms with sarcomas) are provided, at clinical, gross, and histologic levels. In the presentation of every entity, the points that contribute to differential diagnosis are emphasized. More than 300 color images and this analysis of neoplastic and malignant mimics guide the pathologist through recognizing and distinguishing the unusual variants, morphologic anomalies and misleading features that may easily lead to an inaccurate interpretation and missed diagnosis. Since many of entities described are uncommon, Neoplastic Mimics in Soft Tissue and Bone Pathology emphasizes imaging and clinical correlations throughout to support the pathologist as consultant to the entire diagnostic and clinical management team. Every pathologist who sees soft tissue and bone cases will find this book an invaluable working tool to ensure accurate diagnosis. Neoplastic Mimics in Soft Tissue and Bone Pathology features: Over 300 high-quality images showing the full range of neoplastic and malignant mimics in soft tissue and bone specimens Concise, specific text descriptions make the book easy to use as a visual reference Expert authors guide the reader to recognizing and distinguishing misleading specimens
