The Sisterhood of Diabetes engages the reader with 38 true-life stories of women with diabetes-the challenges they faced and the adventures they took. These accomplished women, of all ages and from around the world, are athletes, scholars, and champions in many ways, who will motivate and inspire others, whether diabetic or not, in redefining abilities and venturing beyond self-imposed limits. The message here is to live your dreams with diabetes, or any other challenges, with a positive attitude and inspired determination. While many books offer the "do's and don'ts" of diabetes care, this book bypasses the humdrum and the confusing fuselage of medical terminology and treatment to bring the reader face to face with the real struggles of diabetes, and how to live a rich life in the midst of our challenges. Judith Jones-Ambrosini has lived under the influence of Type 1 diabetes for over fifty years. She knows the importance of exercise, sports and leading an active life as a major component of excellent diabetes care. There are currently over 26 million men, women and children with diabetes in the USA, and 286 million cases worldwide. This book sheds bright light on what can sometimes be a devastating prognosis, by telling true and encouraging stories of successful individuals. Living with diabetes is a challenge, but as Judith so beautifully captures here it doesn't have to keep you from achieving your dreams. Each of these uplifting stories shares a common "golden thread" - the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and the will to dream big. Whether they have diabetes or not, readers of this inspirational book will be encouraged to find their own golden thread. - Chris Dudley, National Basketball Association player for 16 years; founder: Chris Dudley Foundation for youth with diabetes; Type 1 diabetes since 1981 I have known of Judith's commitment to movement and sport for years, and how it has helped her manage her diabetes. Her clear, compelling voice brings us stories of women who discovered that moving is one of our greatest salvations, and tools, to live proudly, strongly and joyfully with diabetes. - Riva Greenberg, author, Diabetes Do's & How-To's and 50 Diabetes Myths...50 Diabetes Truths...; and columnist, The

"No Ordinary Family," is a story, a true story, about young girls that came together and played softball as a team called the Arkansas Playmakers. I had a fellow author read an early copy before it was sent to the publisher. I asked him to look it over and then get back to me with ways the manuscript could be improved. He had many good ideas, and I hope I was able to implement them to his satisfaction. However, he had one question? Were these girls real? Yes. "Their names, too?" he asked. Yes. The story is real, and unlike "Dragnet" the names were not changed. I did not know what I was getting myself into when I chose this assignment; but, I hope everyone that reads this book will come to understand that not everything has to be a soap opera or a world of drama queens. There are parents that coach hard, but remain parents and see the world as one of many colors not just black and white where winning is everything. Fortunately for the Arkansas Playmakers, the parents and the girls have come together to form a unique family that lives, loves, plays and enjoys life together. This book is their story. It is a story of a brother and a sister, girls that came together to form a team but eventually became sisters first and foremost, the bond between softball fathers and their softball daughters and what makes a team a championship team (on and off the field). It is about how a team became part of a small, rural community in the southeastern corner of Arkansas. I hope those that read this book, find it enjoyable and worth your time and effort.

It is eighty-three years after the last of the thinking machines were destroyed in the Battle of Corrin, after Faykan Butler took the name of Corrino and established himself as the first Emperor of a new Imperium. Great changes are brewing that will shape and twist all of humankind. The war hero Vorian Atreides has turned his back on politics and Salusa Secundus. The descendants of Abulurd Harkonnen Griffen and Valya have sworn vengeance against Vor, blaming him for the downfall of their fortunes. Raquella Berto-Anirul has formed the Bene Gesserit School on the jungle planet Rossak as the first Reverend Mother. The descendants of Aurelius Venport and Norma Cenva have built Venport Holdings, using mutated, spice-saturated Navigators who fly precursors of Heighliners. Gilbertus Albans, the ward of the hated Erasmus, is teaching humans to become Mentats...and hiding an unbelievable secret. The Butlerian movement, rabidly opposed to all forms of "dangerous technology," is led by Manford Torondo and his devoted Swordmaster, Anari Idaho. And it is this group, so many decades after the defeat of the thinking machines, which begins to sweep across the known universe in mobs, millions strong, destroying everything in its path. Every one of these characters, and all of these groups, will become enmeshed in the contest between Reason and Faith. All of them will be forced to choose sides in the inevitable crusade that could destroy humankind forever.... Women in Sport offers a timely and comprehensive overview of issues that impact girls' and women's emergence into the mainstream of American sports. Tightly edited with contributions from a broad, interdisciplinary group of scholars, this volume examines political, historical, economic, psychological, physiological, and sociological issues significant to women's participation in sports. The contributors bring a diversity of feminist perspectives to their debate on such controversial topics as the ramifications of Title IX, joining the sports establishment, homophobia in sports, exploitation of minorities, and competitiveness versus nurturing. Replete with discussion questions and a glossary of key terms and concepts, this remarkable volume is ideally suited as a text for courses in gender studies and sport and physical education. In addition, it serves as a valuable reference for professionals working with girls' and women's sports programs. "Editor Greta L. Cohen is to be commended on her coordinating all the material in this work. . . . The 31 authors have prepared excellent chapters. . . . The book is arranged in such a way that each chapter stands alone; students could use parts of the book in any sequence. Each chapter is supplemented by key words used in the overview, discussion questions, and references. Excellent material for undergraduate and graduate students, to supplement courses in history and principles, women's studies, and issues involving women's sports." --Choice "Women in Sport provides a strong, comprehensive review of the issues which influence women's participation in American sports. Chapters feature a strong interdisciplinary approach as they analyze the political, economic, psychological and sociological influences which affect both performance and choices." --The Bookwatch "Dr. Cohen has brought together some of the best authors on the various topics presented. I don't believe you can find better known or more knowledgeable professionals to bring together in one text. A text of this sort will no doubt become a 'classic' in our profession." --Dr. Laurie Priest, Physical Education Chairperson and Director of Athletics, Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts "It is often said that attempts to be all things to all people result in something that is nothing to anyone. However, editor Greta L. Cohen has given us a shining exception to that belief. Women in Sport is a history, an analysis, a guide, a resource and a valuable addition to the library of anyone with an interest in enhancing the experiences of women in sport." --The Women's Sports Experience "This textbook for college students on women's sports experiences does a thorough job of covering all aspects of women in sports. The book begins with a fascinating 4-page chronology . . . . The book deals with such diverse issues as: homophobia, eating disorders, minorities and the Olympic games, and media portrayals of female athletes." --The Feminist Majority Report

Women and diabetes! A huge market and a huge need. The Sisterhood of Diabetes engages the reader with 44 true-life stories of women with diabetes-the challenges they faced and the adventures they took. These accomplished women, of all ages and from around the world, are athletes, scholars, champions in many ways who will motivate and inspire others, whether diabetic or not, in redefining abilities and venturing beyond self-imposed limits. The message here is to live your dreams with diabetes, or any other challenges, with a positive attitude and inspired determination. While many books offer the "do's and don'ts” of diabetes care, this book bypasses the humdrum and the confusing fuselage of medical terminology and treatment to bring the reader face to face with the real struggles and joys of living with diabetes. Judith Ambrosini has lived under the influence of Type 1 diabetes for over 50 years. She knows the importance of exercise, sports and leading an active life as a major component of excellent diabetes care. This understanding influenced her to run and walk marathons, to cycle, dance, and to practice and teach tai chi, which she continues to do today. This health challenge has also guided her to be of service in the international diabetes community. The women she has interviewed for this book come from as far away as Berlin, Australia, New Zealand, Italy and Canada, and as close to home as the next town. They are each strong and confident in their sports and in their lives. Diabetes has become a household word. Everybody knows someone who has it. No longer a fatal disease since the introduction of insulin injection, the escalating numbers of cases is staggering. There are currently over 26 million men, women and children with diabetes in the USA, and 286 million cases worldwide. This book sheds bright light on what can sometimes be a devastating prognosis, by telling true and encouraging stories of successful individuals. The vast primary audience for this book is the diabetes population, but it will be an effective tool for clinicians and health professionals for their own education, and as recommended motivational reading for their patients. Libraries, universities, hospitals, and community resource centers will benefit from the information presented here. The book is also of great appeal to the general reading population for the stories it tells of how people cope and succeed despite obstacles.
