In March 1858 David Livingstone's Zambesi Expedition left Liverpool for Africa. It would not return until July 1864. In the two years leading up to this moment, Livingstone had been transformed from a lone apostle of the London Missionary Society into a national hero and icon of Victorian manhood. Addressing the crowds that had gathered to bid him Godspeed, he declared his intentions to be to put an end to slavery by introducing alternative commerce to south-central Africa: ’What I want to do is get in the thin edge of the wedge, and then leave it to be driven home by English energy and English spirit.’ Livingstone had planned the expedition several years earlier as he toured the country speaking to large audiences about the evils of the slave trade. Publicly and privately he promoted his vision of British industry, British commerce and Christianity working together to bring the light of civilisation to a dark continent. The Zambesis Expedition would gather the information that would allow Livingstone’s grand scheme to move forward. But the truth was that there was little commercial interest in this part of Africa and, while the civilising mission ideology worked as a powerful rhetoric for the philanthropically minded mid-Victorians, by the time of the expedition the official mind was moving against such notions: it was only Livingstone’s fame combined with lobbying from establishment leaders who pursued a scientific agenda for the project, that the expedition came into existence. Zambesi is a tale of expeditionary science in the raw. This book is primarily about the methodological questions involved in attempts to understand two of the most peculiar phenomena in physics, both occurring at the lowest of temperatures. Superconductivity (the disappearance of electrical resistance) and superfluidity (the total absence of viscosity in liquid helium) are not merely peculiar in their own right. Being the only macroscopic quantum phenomena they also manifest a sudden and dramatic change even in those properties which have been amply used within the classical framework and which were thought to be fully understood after the advent of quantum theory. A few years ago we set ourselves the task of carrying out a methodological study of the "most peculiar" phenomena in physics and trying to understand the process by which an observed (rather than predicted) new phenomenon gets "translated" into a physical problem. We thought the best way of deciding which phenomena to choose was to rely on our intuitive notion about the "degrees of peculiarity" developed, no doubt, during the past ten years of active research in theoretical atomic and elementary particle physics. While the merits of the different candidates were compared, we were amazed to realize that neither the phenomena of the very small nor those of the very large could compete with the phenomena of the very cold. These were truly remarkable phenomena if for no other reason than for the difficulties encountered in merely describing them.

This volume, originally published in 1935, sought to reveal the significance of Scottish prehistory for the development of understanding of European prehistory. Written at a time of rapid accumulation of new relics and monuments and the insights from them, Professor Childe presented some important new data and made tentative conclusions for the future results from these finds. After an introduction to the geography of Scotland the book looks at evidence from cairns, tombs and stone circles and then addresses chronologically the evidence from Early Bronze Age to Late and onto the Iron Age, with a chapter devoted to forts, towns and castles. It ends with a discussion of what happened in the Dark Ages and addresses questions about the Celts and the Picts and the diversity of the peoples in Scotland.
