Adobe Photoshop Lightroom — more commonly referred to simply as Lightroom — has made an incredible impact on the digital photography world in a very short time. The reason it has made such a splash is due in large part to the fact that the folks behind Lightroom started out by taking a step back and looking at all the tasks today’s photographers are required to perform with their digital photos. The Lightroom team wanted to know how they could make the process of taking a photo from camera to finished output as efficient as possible while still holding to a level of quality that pro- fessionals demand. They also wanted a means to equally accommodate the surge in photographers turning to shooting in raw mode (where the camera saves the photo data to the memory card, but stops short of processing that data to make it look better), as well as all the photographers who still rely on working with photos in JPEG format (where the camera captures the data and processes it based on the in-camera settings). What the Lightroom team found was that (unsurprisingly) photographers wanted to spend more time shooting and less time in front of their comput- ers. Photographers wanted to have a great deal of control over how their photos were managed, edited, and prepared for output, but they wanted the process to be intuitive and visual. Photographers wanted tools that would help them make the most of the photo data that was captured by their cam- eras, and they wanted consistent output across display mediums (computer screen and prints). Like any group of people they wanted the best of all worlds, and who could blame them! In rising to meet this challenge, a new way of thinking about how we photo- graphers work with our photos emerged. The old model of having one pro- gram for downloading photos, another for managing them, one program for editing raw photos and another for JPG was just growing too cumbersome to meet today’s (and tomorrow’s) demands. The result of this new way of think- ing was Lightroom — a single application designed to encompass all the tasks photographers face (what Lightroom refers to as a photographer’s workflow), and present them in a seamless, logical, and visual manner. Unifying those tasks under a single interface was significant in and of itself, but the real difference Lightroom brings to the table is in what lies under its hood — a database. Referred to as a “catalog” in Lightroom terms, the data- base at Lightroom’s core is where everything (and I do mean everything) you do to your photos gets stored, and the value it brings is twofold in that it is much faster to read and write to a database than it is to change the actual pixels in your photos, and that it is completely nondestructive since your original source photos are never changed. This approach represents a para- digm shift in digital photo management and editing!

Written in concert with Adobe's development of the Photoshop Lightroom 2 Beta, The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers - by #1 bestselling computer and technology author, Scott Kelby - is the most complete and concise Lightroom "how-to" book for digital photographers of all skill levels. In The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers, Scott walks readers through the basics of Lightroom use, leading them to a brilliantly devised and super efficient digital photography workflow that dramatically improves productivity and allows photographers to spend less time processing photos and more time shooting them. Throughout the book Scott shares his personal camera and Lightroom settings, as well as the studio-tested techniques he's developed for his own photography workflow. The book is written in his trademark step-by-step, plain English style, and because he knows what really works and what doesn't, he isn't shy to tell you flat out which tools to use, which to avoid, and why. This allows digital photographers of any skill level to jump right in using Lightroom like a pro from the very start, sidestepping a lot of the frustrations that typically haunt those unfamiliar with new applications…especially those as powerful as Lightroom. What really sets The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers apart from other Lightroom books on the market are the last two bonus chapters where Scott answers the questions, "In exactly what order am I supposed to do things in Lightoom," and "Where does Photoshop fit in to the mix?" Both chapters start with an on-location photo shoot, including full details on the equipment, camera settings, and lighting techniques. Readers then witness as he takes the photos from each shoot through the entire workflow process, to the final output of the 16"x20" prints. And, because he incorporates Photoshop seamlessly right into this workflow, you'll learn some of the latest Photoshop techniques for portrait and landscape photography as well. If you're one of those people who learns best by actually doing the projects yourself; who learns best without all the complicated technical explanations and confusing jargon, and if you really want to start using Lightroom today to unlock the productivity secrets of "The new digital photography workflow,"---there is no faster, more "straight-to-the-point" or more fun way to learn than this groundbreaking new book, and you are absolutely going to love it!
