The monochrome–a single color of paint applied over the entirety of a canvas–remains one of the most contentious modernist artistic inventions. But while the manufacture of these “pictures of nothing” was ostensibly straightforward, their subsequent theorization has been anything but. The monochrome is commonly associated with early twentieth century avant-garde painters such as Kazimir Malevich– who pioneered the form with his “Black Square” in 1915–and, later, Abstract Expressionists such as Mark Rothko. In 2017, the Whitney Biennial included a painting by a white artist, Dana Schutz, of the lynched body of a young black child, Emmett Till. In 1979, anger brewed over a show at New York's Artists Space entitled The Nigger Drawings. In 1969, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition Harlem on My Mind did not include a single work by a black artist. In all three cases, black artists and writers and their allies organized vigorous responses using the only forum available to them: public protest. Whitewalling: Art, Race & Protest in 3 Acts reflects on these three incidents in the long and troubled history of art and race in America. It lays bare how the art world--no less than the country at large--has persistently struggled with the politics of race, and the ways this struggle has influenced how museums, curators and artists wrestle with notions of free speech and the specter of censorship. Whitewalling takes a critical and intimate look at these three "acts" in the history of the American art scene and asks: when we speak of artistic freedom and the freedom of speech, who, exactly, is free to speak? Aruna D'Souza writes about modern and contemporary art, food and culture; intersectional feminisms and other forms of politics; how museums shape our views of each other and the world; and books. What determines your race? Is it your DNA? The community in which you were raised? The way others see you or the way you see yourself? With In Full Color, Rachel Doležal describes the path that led her from being a child of white evangelical parents to an NAACP chapter president and respected educator and activist who identifies as Black. Marlborough Fine Art is delighted to be holding its first exhibition of work by internationally renowned artist John Virtue. It is his first exhibition in London since his highly acclaimed show at the National Gallery in 2005. In 2006 Marlborough invited John Virtue to participate in an annual Artists International Print Project, run by Paupers Press, at the Scuola de Grafica in Venice. The scheme, now in its sixth year, provides artists with the opportunity to spend three weeks in Venice making prints. However, the medium is strictly confined to monotypes, a very direct medium which John Virtue had not tried before and which he viewed with some trepidation. Using drawings for reference he found he could work in a way that closely related to his painting techniques. In essence, the monotypes are a continuation of his work as a painter and are effectively paintings on paper.

Presents exciting, original conclusions about Leonardo da Vinci's early life as an artist and amplifies his role in Andrea del Verrocchio's studio This groundbreaking reexamination of the beginnings of Leonardo da Vinci's (1452-1519) life as an artist suggests new candidates for his earliest surviving work and revises our understanding of his role in the studio of his teacher, Andrea del Verrocchio (1435-1488). Anchoring this analysis are important yet often overlooked considerations about Verrocchio's studio--specifically, the collaborative nature of most works that emerged from it and the probability that Leonardo must initially have learned to paint in tempera, as his teacher did. The book searches for the young artist's hand among the tempera works from Verrocchio's studio and proposes new criteria for judging Verrocchio's own painting style. Several paintings are identified here as likely the work of Leonardo, and others long considered works by Verrocchio or his assistant Lorenzo di Credi (1457/59-1536) may now be seen as collaborations with Leonardo sometime before his departure from Florence in 1482/83. In addition to Laurence Kanter's detailed arguments, the book features three essays presenting recent scientific analysis and imaging that support the new attributions of paintings, or parts of paintings, to Leonardo.
