The third edition of a classic book, Basic Ideas and Concepts in Nuclear Physics sets out in a clear and consistent manner the various elements of nuclear physics. Divided into four main parts: the constituents and characteristics of the nucleus; nuclear interactions, including the strong, weak and electromagnetic forces; an introduction to nuclear structure; and recent developments in nuclear structure research, the book delivers a balanced account of both theoretical and experimental nuclear physics. In addition to the numerous revisions and updates to the previous edition to capture the developments in the subject over the last five years, the book contains a new chapter on the structure and stability of very light nuclei. As with the previous edition the author retains a comprehensive set of problems and the book contains an extensive and well-chosen set of diagrams. He keeps the book up to date with recent experimental and theoretical research, provides mathematical details as and when necessary, and illustrates topics with box features containing examples of recent experimental and theoretical research results.

This is an e-book about a dynamic field theory of house prices, which simplifies the ideas in the author’s previous work, A Field Theory of House Prices (ISBN 978-952-6613-36-9). The text provides new, highly workable ideas based on the major ideas of classical physics combined with the major ideas of classical economics. This synthesis is known as a dynamic field theory of house prices. This is a novel theory that provides a unified, general framework for decision-making that can be applied to any macro-level question about house prices. In order to understand the ideas of this e-book, it is assumed that the reader has a basic understanding of mathematics, which is the language of exact science. The workability of the ideas presented in this e-book are demonstrated using some real, large data sets. These empirical results are documented in the presented material. The local disposable income and the interest variable typically applied in Finland are the ”pushing forces” that generate the demand field. The supply side is the ”attracting force” that does not influence the house prices in the samples investigated, but is still a force that exists. What is a house price? What are the demand field and supply field of housing? This book explains these issues.

Physics is our attempt to conceptually grasp all the happenings around us. Then, realizing that concepts are the free creations of the human mind helps us develop proper understanding of a subject, especially during formative stages. This introductory book on Physics presents careful analysis of the develop-ments of basic concepts for the beginners. It is written in a way that stimulates students and creates a sustained interest in Physics so that studying the subject is enjoyable and satisfying. The physical concepts are explained clearly enough for anyone to understand. In this text, the exercises are provided in three different categories, namely, as questions, as problems, and as multiple choice questions. The first category of exercises contains thought provoking and descriptive questions. The second category of exercises involves numerical computations. The third category of exercises, of multiple choice questions, provides a reader with a flavour of the currently popular mode of examination. Intended for the introductory-level college physics courses, the book will also be an invaluable resource for the students preparing for various competitive examinations. Key Features Readers can modify the given situation to design questions and problems. Solved examples provide quantitative as well as qualitative features of physical situations encountered in the real life. Students will be able to visualize the applicability of the laws of physics.

This is the second volume of the third edition of a successful text, now substantially enlarged and updated to reflect developments over the last decade in the curricula of university courses and in particle physics research. Volume I covered relativistic quantum mechanics, electromagnetism as a gauge theory, and introductory quantum field theory, and ended with the formulation and application of quantum electrodynamics (QED), including renormalization. Building on these foundations, this second volume provides a complete, accessible, and self-contained introduction to the remaining two gauge theories of the standard model of particle physics: quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and the electroweak theory. The treatment significantly extends that of the second edition in several important respects. Simple ideas of group theory are now incorporated into the discussion of non-Abelian symmetries. Two new chapters have been added on QCD, one devoted to the renormalization group and scaling violations in deep inelastic scattering and the other to non-perturbative aspects of QCD using the lattice (path-integral) formulation of quantum field theory; the latter is also used to illuminate various aspects of renormalization theory, via analogies with condensed matter systems. Three chapters treat the fundamental topic of spontaneous symmetry breaking: the (Bogoliubov) superfluid and the (BCS) superconductor are studied in some detail; one chapter is devoted to the implications of global chiral symmetry breaking in QCD; and one to the breaking of local SU(2)xU(1) symmetry in the electroweak theory. Weak interaction phenomenology is extended to include discussion of discrete symmetries and of the possibility that neutrinos are Majorana (rather than Dirac) particles. Most of these topics are normally found only in more advanced texts, and this is the first book to treat them in a manner accessible to the wide readership that the previous editions have attracted.
