This report documents the development of objective waveform discrepancy measures for comparing arbitrary transient response histories. The objective waveform discrepancy measures consist of the magnitude correlation factor, the phase-and-frequency correlation factor, the magnitude error, the phase-and-frequency error, and the combined magnitude and phase-and-frequency errors. Their validity and behavior are checked and demonstrated for several simple sinusoidal responses. The objective discrepancy measures are incorporated into a computer program, named Waveforms Comparison Technique, which processed digitized data tapes containing measured or calculated waveforms or both. The computer program is used to statistically analyze selected data from the DISC Test I event and objectively compare particle velocity measurements made in DISC Test II with expected value waveforms obtained from probabilistic prediction calculations. Appendix A of this report presents a flow chart and user's guide for the computer program WCT. It is recommended that the objective discrepancy measures be used whenever comparisons of two or more waveforms are made. It is also recommended that the technique be extended to objectively quantify differences in laboratory-and field-generated material property test results. (Author).

Recent progress in numerical methods and computer science allows us today to simulate the propagation of seismic waves through realistically heterogeneous Earth models with unprecedented accuracy. Full waveform tomography is a tomographic technique that takes advantage of numerical solutions of the elastic wave equation. The accuracy of the numerical solutions and the exploitation of complete waveform information result in tomographic images that are both more realistic and better resolved. This book develops and describes state of the art methodologies covering all aspects of full waveform tomography including methods for the numerical solution of the elastic wave equation, the adjoint method, the design of objective functionals and optimisation schemes. It provides a variety of case studies on all scales from local to global based on a large number of examples involving real data. It is a comprehensive reference on full waveform tomography for advanced students, researchers and professionals.

This work presents the first scientific, objective approach to market forecasting with the Elliott Wave Theory. The Theory, as introduced by R.N. Elliott in the early 1930's, defines, quantifies and classifies the seemingly random undulations of mass psychology (market action) into visual patterns. Unfortunately, in its original form, many concepts and ideas concerning real-time application of the Elliott Wave Theory were left to the analyst to discover. After over a decade of exhaustive research, real-time trading and teaching, author Glenn Neely has greatly expanded upon and refined the concepts first discovered by R.N. Elliott to help you more accurately apply them to your trading and investments. For the first time, these concepts are presented in a logical, step-by-step fashion in the actual order they should be applied to a chart. Consequently, all guess work typically associated with the Wave Theory has been eliminated for you. If you yearn for both a greater understanding of the dynamics of price action and an ability to accurately forecast future price action, this book will help you achieve that goal like no other. It is widely regarded as the most complete explanation of Elliott Wave Theory available...and a feast for both novice and experienced Elliotticians alike.

This cutting-edge resource offers practical overview of cognitive radio, a paradigm for wireless communications in which a network or a wireless node changes its transmission or reception parameters. The alteration of parameters is based on the active monitoring of several factors in the external and internal radio environment. This book offers a detailed description of cognitive radio and its individual parts. Practitioners learn how the basic processing elements and their capabilities are implemented as modular components. Moreover, the book explains how each component can be developed and tested independently, before integration with the rest of the engine. Practitioners discover how cognitive radio uses artificial intelligence to achieve radio optimization. The book also provides an in-depth working example of the developed cognitive engine and an experimental scenario to help engineers understand its performance and behavior.

Here is the Fourth Edition of the classic text Electrodiagnosis in Diseases of Nerve and Muscle: Principles and Practice. With each subsequent edition, Dr. Kimura has built upon his extensive experience teaching electromyography (EMG) around the world and has transferred his knowledge to the book. It is intended for clinicians who perform electrodiagnostic procedures as an extension of their clinical examination, and will be of value to neurologists and physiatrists who are interested in neuromuscular disorders and noninvasive electrodiagnostic methods, particularly those practicing electromyography (EMG). The book provides a comprehensive review of most peripheral nerve and muscle diseases, including specific techniques and locations for performing each test. While the book has been thoroughly updated to reflect the growth that has been made in the field since 2001, a DVD has also been added to the book, allowing the readers to watch and listen to various types of normal and abnormal EMG activities.

This book trains the next generation of scientists representing different disciplines to leverage the data generated during routine patient care. It formulates a more complete lexicon of evidence-based recommendations and support shared, ethical decision making by doctors with their patients. Diagnostic and therapeutic technologies continue to evolve rapidly, and both individual practitioners and clinical teams face increasingly complex ethical decisions. Unfortunately, the current state of medical knowledge does not provide the guidance to make the majority of clinical decisions on the basis of evidence. The present research infrastructure is inefficient and frequently produces unreliable results that cannot be replicated. Even randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the traditional gold standards of the research reliability hierarchy, are not without limitations. They can be costly, labor intensive, and slow, and can return results that are seldom generalizable to every patient population. Furthermore, many pertinent but unresolved clinical and medical systems issues do not seem to have attracted the interest of the research enterprise, which has come to focus instead on cellular and molecular investigations and single-agent (e.g., a drug or device) effects. For clinicians, the end result is a bit of a “data desert” when it comes to making decisions. The new research infrastructure proposed in this book will help the medical profession to make ethically sound and well informed decisions for their patients.
