As alarming stories about new pathogens like the Ebola virus or Mad Cow Disease fill today's headlines, scientists face a test of their abilities to contain them. But public health officials face a crisis of their own, because even when effective treatments become available, efforts to control disease often fall short. After the Cure was written to improve the prospects for effective management of AIDS and other public health crises. Martin Levin and Mary Bryna Sanger draw on cases of previous large-scale public health initiatives to show how management effectiveness can meet threats to public health.Focusing on AIDS as the most compelling contemporary example of the need for change, the authors advocate a commonsense approach that seeks to minimize the chances of failure. They encourage health officials to exercise "strategic skepticism" by developing plans that anticipate potential problems -- such as scientific controversy over a vaccine's effectiveness or media sensationalism -- which could arise from flaws in program design and implementation.Case studies involving polio, swine flu, childhood immunization, reemergent TB, and the early AIDS experiences demonstrate the variety of managerial problems that can confront such initiatives. By reviewing the lessons of these cases, the authors suggest how their approach can be applied to the management of AIDS and future public health threats. They then present both a critique of the early mismanagement of the AIDS crisis and a scenario for "the day after an AIDS vaccine is discovered".Because epidemics are likely to increase, After the Cure clearly demonstrates the importance of anticipating obstacles to their management throughskillful scenario writing. Combining careful analysis with practical advice, it shows that in the public health arena, management matters as much as medicine.

2009 Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2009 Association of American University Presses Award for Jacket Design Chemo brain. Fatigue. Chronic pain. Insomnia. Depression. These are just a few of the ongoing, debilitating symptoms that plague some breast-cancer survivors long after their treatments have officially ended. While there are hundreds of books about breast cancer, ranging from practical medical advice to inspirational stories of survivors, what has been missing until now is testimony from the thousands of women who continue to struggle with persistent health problems. After the Cure is a compelling read filled with fascinating portraits of more than seventy women who are living with the aftermath of breast cancer. Emily K. Abel is one of these women. She and her colleague, Saskia K. Subramanian, whose mother died of cancer, interviewed more than seventy breast cancer survivors who have suffered from post-treatment symptoms. Having heard repeatedly that “the problems are all in your head,” many don't know where to turn for help. The doctors who now refuse to validate their symptoms are often the very ones they depended on to provide life-saving treatments. Sometimes family members who provided essential support through months of chemotherapy and radiation don't believe them. Their work lives, already disrupted by both cancer and its treatment, are further undermined by the lingering symptoms. And every symptom serves as a constant reminder of the trauma of diagnosis, the ordeal of treatment, and the specter of recurrence. Most narratives about surviving breast cancer end with the conclusion of chemotherapy and radiation, painting stereotypical portraits of triumphantly healthy survivors, women who not only survive but emerge better and stronger than before. Here, at last, survivors step out of the shadows and speak compellingly about their “real” stories, giving voice to the complicated, often painful realities of life after the cure. This book received funding from the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

One intrepid reporter's quest to learn everything there is to know about hangovers, trying all of the cures he can find and explaining how (and if) they work, all so rest of us don't have to We've all been there. One minute you're fast asleep, and in the next you're tumbling from dreams of deserts and demons, into semi-consciousness, mouth full of sand, head throbbing. You're hungover. Courageous journalist Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall has gone to the front lines of humanity's age-old fight against hangovers to settle once and for all the best way to get rid of the aftereffects of a night of indulgence (short of not drinking in the first place). Hangovers have plagued human beings for about as long as civilization has existed (and arguably longer), so there has been plenty of time for cures to be concocted. But even in 2018, little is actually known about hangovers, and less still about how to cure them. Cutting through the rumor and the myth, Hungover explores everything from polar bear swims, to saline IV drips, to the age-old hair of the dog, to let us all know which ones actually work. And along the way, Bishop-Stall regales readers with stories from humanity's long and fraught relationship with booze, and shares the advice of everyone from Kingsley Amis to a man in a pub.

In obstetrics and gynecology, as in other medical disciplines, great satisfaction comes from doing, but a greater satisfaction comes from knowing. The desire to know raises clinical practice to its highest level. This principle guided us in determining the objectives for this volume. Several standard textbooks of obstetrics and gynecology include information about infectious problems. Infectious Diseases in the Female Patient is unique in that it emphasizes primarily the basic science as pects of infections in obstetrics and gynecology. Although providing a practitioner's handbook was not our goal, the reader nevertheless will find discussions of the management of infections in the female pa tient. The continued growth of knowledge about infectious disease en countered in obstetrics and gynecology has come from many sources: bacteriology, virology, genetics, immunology, biochemistry, physiol ogy, and pharmacology. Insights from all these disciplines contribute to the conceptual framework of this volume. Many of the authors who contributed to this text are leaders in their respective areas of research and bring to the book a diversity of ex pertise and experience. Controversial issues are developed in a bal anced fashion, and, in most cases, opposing views are discussed. Since medical texts usually are read piece-meal rather than cover to cover, we have allowed some overlap between chapters. The slight degree of redundancy allows each chapter to stand on its own, so that the reader may obtain the necessary information from a single chapter.
